Entrance Matting plays a crucial role in ensuring dirt and moisture are left at the door and not tracked into your building where they can cause unnecessary wear and tear to your interiors or worse- cause slip and trip hazards!
In playing its small but vital role, Entrance Matting can get dirty – quickly. It is estimated that an average of 0.58g of soil is brought into the building with every entrant.
To ensure your Entrance Matting performs at an optimum level it needs to be kept clean and maintained which will not only extend its lifespan but that of your interiors as well.
Understanding the Zonal System
The Zonal System comprises of three areas, each with different matting and maintenance needs.

Each zone works in harmony with the next to keep the internal environment safe and aesthetically pleasing for visitors. However, to ensure they each perform their part, they need to be properly cleaned and maintained.
Daily Cleaning
Normal soiling should be removed daily with a vacuum cleaner with rotating brush to help release dirt and loose fibres. We highly recommend the Sebo Evolution range with red brushes for a high performance clean.
Foreign objects should be removed as soon as possible – chewing gum is a particularly stubborn substance that can easily become ingrained into flooring. This is especially true at shopping centres, retail spaces, office, and educational buildings. To prevent permanent hardening of the gum, specialist freezing sprays or gels can be used to aid removal.
A pH neutral spot cleaner can also be used where necessary.
Deep Cleaning – every 6-12 months
The frequency of deep cleaning will depend on levels of soiling and the amount of traffic into the building. Always begin with the daily cleaning routine before commencing a deep clean.
- Fibre matting should be deep-cleaned using a water extraction machine, ensuring a final run with clean water to remove all residue. Dry chemical systems (e.g. Host) are also effective for treating soiled areas.
- Closed construction aluminium channels should be wiped with a mild detergent to help free any soiling and all residue removed to maintain appearance.
- Open construction or roll-able matting should be rolled back, section by section, and the base of the matwell thoroughly swept/vacuumed. Any debris caught in the channels should be removed and then the matting rolled back into position. Take care not to drag the matting.
Periodic Maintenance
Primary matting should be carefully removed from the matwell and sprayed with a high-pressure water machine. Any damaged or worn inserts can also be recycled and replaced with minimal cost implications.
Specific Advice
Use of strong cleaning chemicals should be avoided. Only pH neutral carpet detergents suitable for nylon fibres should be used such as M2 Care Ultra.
As with all matting, when subject to heavy wheeled traffic (scissor lifts/pallet trucks etc) it should be suitably protected with plywood boarding.
Remember
Look after your Entrance Matting and it will look after you and your visitors – A proper maintenance procedure will help extend the life of your entrance matting and the interior floor coverings beyond, ensuring a safe, clean environment for years to come.
