How INTRAsystems made it Happen

In the epicentre of London’s Tech City, The White Collar Factory complex offers a mix of office space, incubator space, restaurants and apartments. With generous working spaces, flexible floor plans, operable windows, and robust construction, the White Collar Factory 16-storey tower at the heart of the complex represents a new type of office building that takes its cue from the factory of yesteryear.

Following an 8-year research project to understand what users want from an office, architects AHMM created The White Collar Factory combining the research findings with sustainability principles. The result is a sustainable, healthy and flexible office space, that produces 25% less carbon, achieving a BREEAM Outstanding rating and LEED Platinum rating.

The bare concrete ceilings stand 3.5 metres high, rather than the usual 2.5 metres to create a bright, light space and engineer Arup designed a heating and cooling system that is 15% cheaper than conventional air-conditioning to build and up to 20% cheaper to run. For those working in modern hermetically sealed offices, the idea of opening a window may sound implausible but as part of the cooling system, all windows in the White Collar Factory are designed to be opened, a rarity in a modern building of such status.

Working with the architect, a soft curving design utilising INTRAflex XT with black anodised frame coupled with black rubber and black INTRAlux Elite inserts was specified to blend with the character of the building and supporting the architect’s sustainability aims. This combination of inserts provides superior moisture absorption, excellent environmental credentials and acoustic properties, to provide an exceptionally durable entrance matting system.
