Entrance Matting At The Brent Civic Centre

A stunning aesthetic

Designed by Hopkins Architects, Brent Civic Centre was constructed in 2013 as part of a major modernisation and centralisation initiative. It was the first public building to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating to make it the most sustainable building of its kind in the UK.

Housing Brent’s civic, public and administrative functions, including community hall, library and civic chamber, alongside retail space and landscaped gardens, the 40,000 m² building provides a modern hub for the local community.

To ensure safety and maintain interiors, the soaring, naturally lit foyer utilises a 15m wide and 7.5m deep entrance mat with double-width absorbent INTRAlux Elite fibre set within our INTRAform DM entrance matting system.

The two revolving doors are fitted with a combination of fibre and rubber inserts to remove coarse grit and excess moisture while the extra deep walk off area exceeds WELL guidance on matting sizes, to minimise pollutants into the building.

The same specification was used at the separate library entrance. Here, the entrance mat stretches wall to wall, with a large 6m walk off area stepped out to fit around the floor ventilation grilles. This, again, exceeds the WELL recommended length to ensure superior retention of dirt and moisture.

Installation works were phased and conducted out of hours to ensure business continuity while at the library entrance, the team needed to carefully remove the electronic tagging system to allow the matting to be fitted. The system was then reinstated after the installation ready for the working day.

The specification used at both entrances is ideal for such a busy public space, with high volume, multi-directional and wheeled traffic, whilst precision installation and exacting rib alignment ensure a stunning aesthetic.
