This back-to-frame Grade A office refurbishment in mid-town London features three bold horizontal stripes of entrance matting to make a striking first impression on visitors.

Originally built in 1988, Five Norwich Street has undergone a complete refurbishment to bring it up to modern standards.

The Challenge

One of the key challenges facing Ian McArdle Architects in this project was to create a better arrival experience.

To do this they have completely remodelled the ground floor reception area using contemporary signage, stone elements and floor-to-ceiling glazing.

A strong linear aesthetic is inherent throughout the space.

Simple stone, metal, and glass elements are complemented by coffered ceiling panels and large rectangles of recessed downlighting.

A six-metre-wide timber desk and three blocks of INTRAform DM entrance matting with anthracite fibre then punctuate this natural palette.

From the sliding doors to the split-level floor, to the inset blocks of entrance matting, all elements within this refurbished reception work harmoniously to enhance the strong linear aesthetic.

The Solution

Three wide stripes of entrance matting provide a tough and durable design-led entrance matting solution.

Each block of matting is four planks deep and nearly 4 metres wide. This provides a sufficient area of matting to meet regulations and best practice guidelines.

The simple aluminium milled finish matches the metal columns in the reception space and the extra-wide fibre inserts minimise strobing which can be an issue when specifying contrasting fibre and wiper bars.

The double-width fibre inserts also provide superior dirt and moisture absorption and retention. While the use of the dark-coloured INTRAlux Linear anthracite fibre hides soiling and provides a strong visual contrast to the stone floor.
