How does the entrance matting work?
Liverpool Street Station opened in 1874 to replace Bishopsgate station as the Great Eastern Railway’s main London terminus. Liverpool Street was built as a dual-level station with provision for the Underground and a tube station opened just one year later.
By 1895 Liverpool Street Station had the largest number of platforms of any railway terminal in London and was fast becoming the main station in the city.
Today, the station is served by the Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan lines and is the third-busiest railway station in the United Kingdom after Waterloo and Victoria.
Managed directly by Network Rail, trains depart from Liverpool Street main-line station for destinations across the east of England, including Norwich, Southminster, Ipswich, Clacton-on-Sea, Colchester, Chelmsford, Southend Victoria, Cambridge, Harlow Town, and many more suburban stations in north and east London, Essex, and Hertfordshire. It serves on average over 63.6 million passenger entries and exits each year and is a popular destination for commuters; a report in 2015 ranked the route into Liverpool Street as the eighth busiest in London. With such a high level of footfall, it was essential to install heavy-duty entrance matting that would comply with TfL regulations and stop dirt and moisture entering the building.
A combination of INTRAform FR and INTRAgrille stainless steel grilles were specified to meet the brief. INTRAform FR is made from non-combustible aluminium with rubber inserts that meet the BS6853 Cat 1A requirements and have the highest HL3 rating under the European railway standard for fire safety, EN45545-2.
The inserts are fire-resistant, with low toxic smoke emissions and are specifically designed to be installed in high-risk areas such as underground stations. As such, the system is authorised by TfL for use across the London Underground network, including section 12 locations.
