Highly Effective Entrance Matting
Designed by Scott Brownrigg and constructed by Interserve, the £30m Spark Teaching Building for Southampton Solent University provides state-of-the-art facilities and innovative teaching spaces. We worked with the architect to devise an entrance matting specification that would withstand the heavy foot traffic of this busy university.
The redevelopment saw the creation of a stunning atrium, which forms the central hub of the teaching and conference facilities. Measuring 18 metres across and 80 metres long, it includes a distinctive multifunctional suspended ‘pod’. Designed to reflect the areas nautical heritage, the pod houses a full-size lecture theatre and an open viewing platform above.
As well as providing a strong sense of arrival, the full height atrium is fundamental to the circulation strategy for the building. Five-storeys of lecture and seminar rooms are located around the central atrium, accessed via a series of bridge walkways.
INTRAform DM entrance matting is installed at the multiple entrances to the building. The double-width INTRAlux Elite fibre inserts in this entrance matting system provide superior soil and moisture retention to remove contaminants from the footwear and wheels of the hundreds of students and faculty using the building each day.
The heavy-duty closed construction aluminium planks can withstand heavy loads and offer superb durability with a 10-year warranty. The INTRAform DM entrance matting system is also compatible with our full range of rubber and fibre inserts to meet a wide range of design and performance needs.
